TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Hasan Sadikin General Hospital (RSHS) in Bandung has prepared an isolation room for patients with influenza A subclade K, also known as Super Flu. According to Yovita Hartantri, the Head of the New Emerging and Re-emerging Infectious Disease Team at RSHS Bandung, the room is similar to the one used for Covid-19 patients. "There are specific isolation areas in the intensive care unit, regular wards, and the emergency department," she said at RSHS Bandung on Thursday, January 8, 2026.

Yovita stated that RSHS Bandung has implemented examination procedures for patients who come with symptoms such as cough, fever, runny nose, and shortness of breath. They will be examined through the collection of samples, for example, from the nose or through swabs, which will then be examined in the laboratory.

Dr. Leonardus Widyatmoko, a clinical microbiology specialist at RSHS, added that the sample examination could be conducted at regional or national reference laboratories. However, to identify the virus variant that is part of influenza A, DNA sequencing tests are conducted at the National Institute of Health Research and Development's Biomedical Laboratory in Jakarta.

He mentioned that regional laboratories, such as the RSHS Bandung and West Java Health Laboratory in Bandung, determine the type of disease. "Whether it is influenza A, B, or others," Leonardus said.

The Medical and Nursing Director of RSHS Bandung, Iwan Abdul Rachman, emphasized that the situation of Super Flu cases is different from the Covid-19 pandemic, although the handling procedures are similar. "The causes, symptoms, and risks are different," he said.

Iwan explained that influenza is seasonal, so there are phases where cases will increase and then decrease, repeatedly. The prevention method is to adopt a clean and healthy lifestyle. "If one has the flu, there is no need to panic because not everyone needs to undergo swab tests," he said while emphasizing the importance of wearing a mask, "So that people around you won't get infected."

Based on laboratory tests, ten patients at RSHS Bandung were confirmed to be infected with influenza A subclade K, also known as Super Flu. One of the patients, who had underlying or comorbid conditions, has passed away. These patients visited between August and December 2025. "There have been no further reports since then," said the Head of the West Java Health Office, Vini Adiani Dewi, on Thursday evening.
