TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Questioned by the Ad Hoc Team for the Investigation of Gross Human Rights Violations in the Murder of Munir Said Thalib, formed by the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM), Hendardi was asked about his relationship with the late Pollycarpus Budihari Priyanto. Polly—who died in 2020—was a former Garuda Indonesia pilot and was sentenced to 14 years in prison in the Munir murder case.

“I told them about Polly’s attempts to approach me before he knew Munir,” said Hendardi, Chair of the National Council of the Setara Institute, recounting the examination conducted in early 2025 to Tempo in South Jakarta on Wednesday, December 17, 2025. The Setara Institute is an organization focused on human rights and diversity.

Hendardi said Polly once visited his office at the Indonesian Legal Aid Association (PBHI) in early 2004, or eight months before Munir’s death. Polly came to introduce himself and to ask for help repatriating two pro-integration East Timorese citizens. Hendardi had ties to the former Portuguese colony because he once served as legal adviser to Xanana Gusmão, now the prime minister of Timor-Leste.

According to Hendardi, Polly also called him regularly, two to three times a week. “He offered free tickets to Papua,” Hendardi said. In each instance, Hendardi refused the offer. He suggested that any travel facilities to Papua be redirected to the person responsible for Papua issues at PBHI. Polly said the free ticket offer applied only to Hendardi.
