TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Iran has arrested 20 individuals accused of being agents of the Israeli intelligence agency, Mossad, in recent months. According to Al Arabiya, Iran's Judiciary has stated that the accused will not receive any leniency and will be made an example of.
On Wednesday, Iran executed Rouzbeh Vadi, a nuclear scientist convicted of spying for Israel. State media reported that Vadi was accused of sharing information about other nuclear scientists who were killed in an Israeli airstrike on Iran in June.
On Saturday, Justice Ministry spokesperson Asghar Jahangiri told reporters in Tehran that charges against some of the 20 detainees had been dropped, and they had been released. He did not specify the number.
"The judiciary will show no leniency toward spies and agents of the Zionist regime, and with firm rulings, will make an example of them all," Jahangiri said, according to Iranian media.
He said that full details would be released after the investigation is complete. Executions of Iranians convicted of spying for Israel have increased this year. At least eight death sentences have been carried out in recent months.
In June, Israel launched a 12-day airstrike on Iran, targeting senior generals, nuclear scientists, nuclear installations, and settlements. Iran responded with a barrage of missiles and drones toward Israel.
According to the HRANA human rights group, 1,190 Iranians died during Israel's 12-day attack, including 436 civilians and 435 security personnel. Israel said 28 people were killed in Iran's retaliatory strikes.
