TEMPO.COJakarta - The Ministry of Manpower has recorded 104,711 applicants for the national internship program, with 1,147 companies participating across Indonesia.

"For the first stage, we will start with 20,000 participants. Subsequently, a second wave will be prepared for 80,000 participants," announced Minister of Manpower Yassierli at his office in South Jakarta on Monday, October 13, 2025.

Yassierli stated that the program aims to provide opportunities and work experience for bachelor's and diploma graduates across various industrial sectors. Crucially, the selection process is carried out directly by the participating companies, not by the Ministry of Manpower. Each applicant is asked to choose three internship positions of interest, and companies will select based on their needs and the applicant data received.

The Minister also urged all regional heads to encourage more companies and institutions to participate. He mentioned plans to expand the program to include ministries, institutions, and central or regional government agencies.

"The President's directive is clear: internship opportunities must be provided as widely and evenly as possible in all provinces. Not only for graduates, but also diploma holders," he said.

Union Urges Protection Against Exploitation

Despite the government's enthusiasm, the All-Indonesian Workers Union Association (ASPIRASI) has urged the government to ensure the National Internship Program is not abused as a means of exploiting young workers.

"Internships should be a bridge to decent work, not a tool for exploitation," emphasized ASPIRASI President Mirah Sumirat in a written statement on Monday, October 13, 2025.

She stressed the importance of supervision to prevent companies from using the program to avoid their labor obligations. According to Mirah, the government must guarantee a clear internship period, a real training and mentoring structure, and a ban on using internship participants as replacements for permanent workers.

Furthermore, Mirah advocated that internship participants be given priority for recruitment as permanent workers after the program ends, viewing this as a form of job continuity and welfare improvement. She also called for strengthened government oversight and the involvement of labor unions.

According to her, the involvement of labor unions in the design, implementation, and evaluation of this program is important to ensure the protection of the rights of internship participants and alignment with the principles of social justice. "We support the government's steps as long as the implementation is carried out transparently, fairly, and oriented towards protecting workers' rights," Mirah concluded
