TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Tech giant Meta is reportedly exploring a partnership with Artificial Intelligence (AI) firm Anthropic to lease a portion of its data center capacity. If realized, this step will open a new business line for the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, which has so far obtained most of its income from advertising.
Citing The New York Times, discussions between Meta and Anthropic are still in the early stages. However, the value of the partnership is estimated to reach US$10 billion or around Rp180 trillion (assuming an exchange rate of Rp18,000 per US dollar) over a two-year period.
This report follows other news stating that Meta is considering entering the cloud services business. Through this business, Meta will provide compute resources to other companies.
Signals regarding this business opportunity were actually conveyed by Meta's CEO Mark Zuckerberg in the company's earnings call last year. According to him, Meta often receives requests to lease its data center capacity. "We get requests like this almost every week," said Zuckerberg, quoted from Engadget, July 17, 2026.
He added that leasing data center capacity is "an option" that the company can consider in the future.
Although Meta and Anthropic are competitors in the AI field, the collaboration is considered beneficial for both parties. Meta is currently making a large investment to build AI data centers to support the development of its AI models. The company expects to spend about US$125 billion to US$145 billion throughout 2026, or around Rp2.250 trillion to Rp2.610 trillion.
By leasing a portion of its data center capacity to Anthropic, Meta has the opportunity to earn new income from the infrastructure investment it has built. On the other hand, Anthropic needs a large amount of computing capacity to train and run its AI models.
Prior to this, Anthropic also signed a similar agreement with SpaceXAI ahead of the IPO this summer. The reported value of the partnership reached US$45 billion or around Rp810 trillion over three years.
After announcing the partnership, Anthropic, which developed Claude Code, immediately increased the rate limit for its customers.
