TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The number of vehicles leaving Jakarta surged on the first day of the 2025 Operation Candle. Monitoring on Saturday, December 20, 2025, showed that a total of 189,371 vehicles exited the capital through the city’s four main toll gates, an increase of 9.2 percent compared to normal daily traffic.
“The 9.2 percent rise in vehicles leaving Jakarta reflects growing mobility as the weekend and the Christmas-New Year holiday period approach,” said National Police spokesperson for Operation Candle 2025, Commissioner Umi Fadillah, in a written statement on Sunday, December 21, 2025.
Meanwhile, the inflow of vehicles into Jakarta also saw a rise, with 151,721 vehicles entering the city, a 4.08 percent increase compared to typical traffic conditions.
Umi noted that, compared to the first day of last year’s Operation Candle, vehicle outflow from Jakarta increased by 3.6 percent, while vehicle inflow decreased slightly by 1.71 percent.
“This data highlights the dominance of outbound traffic on the first day of Operation Candle 2025,” she said.
“We are focusing on strengthening traffic management, especially at key toll gates and main routes leaving Jakarta.”
Operation Candle 2025 began on December 20, 2025, to secure Christmas and New Year (Nataru) celebrations. Inspector General Mohammad Fadil Imran, Main Operations Assistant (Astamaops) of the National Police Chief, stated that the operation will continue for two weeks, until January 2, 2026.
A total of 146,701 personnel will be deployed, consisting of 77,637 police officers, 13,775 military personnel, and 55,289 personnel from other related agencies, Fadil said during a briefing on Friday, December 19, 2025.
Personnel will be stationed at 44,436 locations, including churches, shopping centers, terminals, train stations, ports, airports, and popular tourist destinations, to ensure security and smooth traffic flow throughout the holiday period.
