Mother Gives Birth During Flight, Ryanair Diverted to France

6 hours ago 2

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A Ryanair flight from Belgium to Spain was forced to divert to Limoges, France, because a pregnant woman gave birth to her baby on Thursday, May 8, 2025. The incident occurred about one hour after the plane took off.

The FR4797 flight from South Charleroi Brussels Airport in Belgium departed on schedule at 13:30 local time bound for Castellon de la Plana Airport in Spain. One hour after takeoff inside the Boeing 737-800 aircraft with registration EI-EFO, a pregnant woman began to give birth, as quoted from People, according to a report by Business Insider citing data from the Flight tracking service Flightradar24.

After announcing a medical emergency and coordinating with air traffic control, the pilot diverted the flight to the nearest possible airport, Limoges-Bellegarde Airport (LIG) in southwest France. This airport is a regular destination for Ryanair but not on the initial flight path.

Ninety minutes after the plane made an emergency landing in France, it resumed its flight to Spain. Due to the unexpected delay, the plane was reported to be less than two hours late from its scheduled arrival at the destination airport in Castelln, Spain.

Until now, there has been no response from Ryanair regarding the incident. The event of a pregnant woman giving birth on a plane is not common, but it could happen occasionally. Previously, a flight attendant and two medical professionals on a Brussels Airlines plane assisted a woman in giving birth to a child in February 2025.

"As a cabin crew member, you are trained for everything, including this kind of job, but nothing really prepares you for it. But we remained calm, worked as a team, and followed our procedures," said the airline's flight attendant in a statement.

Like most airlines, there are specific rules for pregnant passengers. As stated on the Ryanair website, pregnant women are allowed to fly until the 28th week of pregnancy. Once the pregnancy reaches the 28th week, the pregnant woman must carry a letter from a doctor or midwife stating that she is allowed to fly.

Even with this letter, pregnant women are not allowed to fly after the 36th week of pregnancy. Meanwhile, pregnant women expecting twins are not allowed to fly at all after 32 weeks. If in doubt about the pregnancy condition for flying or experiencing complications during pregnancy, please consult a doctor before booking a flight ticket.

While a woman needs to wait two days after giving birth before flying, and longer if undergoing a cesarean section. If bringing a baby on a flight, try to wait at least eight days. Although there are rumors that a child gets a lifetime of free flights if born on a plane, this does not happen often.
