TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Former Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Nadiem Makarim has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for his role in the procurement of Chromebook laptops and Chrome Device Management (CDM) within the ministry from 2019 to 2022. Chief judge Purwanto S. Abdullah read the verdict at the Jakarta Corruption Court on Tuesday, June 30, 2026.
"The defendant Nadiem Anwar Makarim has been proven legally and convincingly guilty of committing corruption together," said Purwanto on Tuesday.
In addition to the prison sentence, Nadiem has also been ordered to pay a fine of Rp1 billion, with the provision that if the fine is not paid, it will be substituted with a prison sentence of 190 days. "Imposing an additional penalty of paying compensation amounting to Rp809,597,125,000," said Purwanto.
It is stipulated that if the compensation is not paid, then his assets may be seized and auctioned. If his assets are insufficient to cover the compensation, it will be substituted with a 5-year prison sentence.
Previously, Nadiem was sentenced to 18 years in prison, fined Rp1 billion, and ordered to pay Rp5.68 trillion in compensation, with an additional 9 years in prison if he did not pay. The prosecution believed that Nadiem violated Article 603 in conjunction with Article 18 of the Corruption Law in conjunction with Article 20 letter c of Law Number 1 of 2023 concerning the Criminal Code (KUHP).
Nadiem was accused of enriching himself by Rp809.59 billion in the case of procuring Chromebook laptops and Chrome Device Management (CDM) within the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology for the period 2019-2022. He was also accused of enriching 12 private companies as Chromebook vendors.
According to the prosecution, Chromebooks were selected solely to encourage Google to increase its investment in PT Aplikasi Karya Anak Bangsa (AKAB), a company founded by Nadiem, for his business interests. After Gojek and Tokopedia merged in 2021, PT AKAB was known as PT GoTo Gojek Tokopedia. Before the merger with Tokopedia, Google was listed as one of Gojek's longtime business partners.
The prosecution assessed that the procurement of Chromebook resulted in state financial losses of Rp2.18 trillion. This figure consists of Rp1.56 trillion from the procurement of Chromebook laptops according to the Audit Board of the Republic of Indonesia (BPKP), and US$44.05 million, equivalent to Rp621.38 billion (based on the lowest exchange rate from August 2020 to December 2022) due to the procurement of Chrome Device Management.
