OpenAI Unveils GPT-4o: AI for Image Creation and Editing

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - OpenAI has officially launched the image-generation and editing feature on ChatGPT through the GPT-4o model. This service refreshes the capabilities of the ChatGPT image generator, which has not been updated in the past year.

OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, introduced the feature through a live broadcast on Tuesday, March 25, 2025. The feature is available to Pro package customers for US$200 per month.

"GPT-4o native image generation is live today in ChatGPT and Sora," Altman said, as quoted from Tech Crunch on Friday, March 28, 2025.

In addition to creating images, GPT-4o can edit images, including those featuring humans. This AI model can elaborate on objects in the foreground and background. Compared to its predecessor, DALL-E 3, GPT-4o has a slightly longer processing time. However, the images it creates are more accurate and detailed.

OpenAI management revealed that GPT-4o was trained with publicly available data and exclusive data from partnerships with companies such as Shutterstock. However, OpenAI still maintains copyright policies.

OpenAI's Chief Operating Officer, Brad Lightcap, ensures that their artificial intelligence services are designed not to create images similar to those of artists, especially those still alive. "We’re respecting of the artists’ rights," he said.

As part of this commitment, OpenAI provides a form for creators who want to remove their work from the GPT-4o training dataset. In line with the creators' input, the company also stated that it will prevent web-scraping bots from collecting data from websites, including images.

OpenAI is still postponing the free launch of this built-in image generator feature on ChatGPT. According to Altman, this tool proved much more popular than management had anticipated. Users have tested this new generator and flooded social media with Studio Ghibli-style images.

OpenAI now only offers GPT-4o to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team customers. There is no update about free access. Altman said, on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, the launch for free users will be delayed for the time being.
