TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto has formed the Task Force for the Acceleration of Rehabilitation and Reconstruction after disasters in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra. Prabowo appointed Minister Tito Karnavian as the head of the task force.

Prabowo established the task force during a cabinet retreat in Hambalang, Bogor, West Java, on Tuesday night, January 6, 2026. "The consideration is because this disaster has impacted three quite extensive provinces," stated State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi when announcing the task force at the location.

Prabowo appointed Lieutenant General Richard Tampubolon, the Chief of General Staff of the Indonesian National Defense Forces (TNI), as the deputy head of the task force, alongside Tito Karnavian. Additionally, Pratikno, the Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture, was appointed head of the advisory board.

According to Prasetyo, Tito was appointed head of the task force due to his role as Minister of Home Affairs. This position is considered strategic for coordinating the recovery from the Sumatra disasters. "The President had considerations and believed that under the Minister of Home Affairs, the coordination can be better," stated Prasetyo.

Prasetyo mentioned that there are no specific work targets for the Task Force for the Acceleration of Rehabilitation and Reconstruction after disasters. "There are none, once the steps are at the earliest stage, for the priority, it is certainly to build as many dwellings as possible for our compatriots who are still in refugee camps," he said.

As of Tuesday, January 6, 2026, the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) reported that floods and landslides in three Sumatran provinces had killed 1,178 people. This number is based on data from BNPB's Indonesian Disaster Data Geoportal.

"Reaching 1,178 souls," wrote the report from the Indonesian Disaster Data Geoportal, Tuesday, January 6, 2026, morning.

Three regencies/cities have the highest number of deaths. The three regions are Aceh Utara with 229 people, Agam Regency with 194 people, and Central Tapanuli with 128 people.

Still in the same data, the number of missing persons is 148. Meanwhile, 142,200 people are still in refugee camps.

Head of Data, Information, and Communication Center for Disaster Management at the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), Abdul Muhari, previously stated that 1,177 people died due to disasters in Sumatra as of Sunday, January 4, 2026, afternoon.
