TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Coordinating Minister Airlangga Hartarto said that the trade tariff agreement between Indonesia and the United States (US) was reached in early 2026. He stated that President Prabowo Subianto and President Donald Trump are expected to sign the Agreement on Reciprocal Tariff (ART) document by the end of January 2026.
"Currently, the United States is scheduling the appropriate time for the planned meeting between the two leaders," Airlangga said in a virtual press conference from Washington, D.C., United States, on Tuesday, December 23, 2025 Jakarta time. This development was reported by Airlangga after meeting with Ambassador Jamieson Greer from the United States Trade Representative (USTR).
During the meeting, Airlangga said that Indonesia and the US addressed issues that were of interest to each country. He claimed that both countries had agreed on substantial issues contained in the ART document. Meanwhile, the technical legal drafting process will continue in the second week of January 2026.
Airlangga stated that this agreement continues the joint statement of the two countries released on July 22, where the import tariffs for Indonesian products were reduced from 32 percent to 19 percent. The former Chairman of the Golkar Party mentioned that the US provided tariff exemptions for several superior Indonesian products.
"The US has granted tariff exemptions for our superior products such as palm oil, coffee, tea, and of course, America is very hopeful to gain access to critical minerals," Airlangga said. The tariff exemptions are good news for the domestic industry, especially the labor-intensive sector.
Furthermore, Airlangga also mentioned that Indonesia is committed to addressing non-tariff barriers as outlined in the joint statement. One of the steps taken by the government is to establish a debottlenecking task force to solve issues in the business world.
Indonesian Ambassador to the US, Indroyono Soesilo, added that the Indonesian Embassy in Washington is currently awaiting instructions from Jakarta to prepare for Prabowo's visit for the trade agreement signing. "God willing, once the agreement has been finalized, it can be implemented immediately," said Soesilo.
