TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) will introduce John Herdman as the coach of the Indonesian national team to the public through a press conference on Monday, January 12, 2026. The event will take place at a Jakarta hotel at 9:00 AM local time. It can be watched live via the PSSI and Indonesian national team YouTube channels.
The Indonesian football federation announced Herdman's appointment on Saturday, January 3, 2026. He replaces Patrick Kluivert, who was fired on October 16, 2025, after failing to lead the Garuda squad to qualify for the 2026 World Cup following two losses in the fourth round of qualifying matches.
Herdman is known as a coach with a non-instant career path. He began his career by teaching part-time while coaching youth teams.
In 2001, he left England and moved to New Zealand with his wife, Clare, who has been by his side since their teenage years. Family support, including their two children, Lilly and Jay, is said to have played an important part in his coaching career journey.
He coached the New Zealand women's national team in the 2007 and 2011 World Cups, and made history by winning two consecutive Olympic bronze medals in 2012 and 2016.
Meanwhile, in the men's sector, Herdman successfully led Canada to the 2022 Qatar World Cup, a historic moment for the country after 36 years. Canada's qualification for the World Cup elevated their FIFA ranking from 77 to 33 in the world at the time.
After being appointed as the coach of the Indonesian national team, Herdman will guide the Garuda squad to compete in the FIFA Series at Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium during FIFA Match Day from March 23 to 31, 2026. Following that, the upcoming schedule includes FIFA Match Day matches in June, September, October, and November, as well as the AFF Cup 2026 scheduled to start from July 25.
