TEMPO.CO, Jakarta The death toll from flash floods and landslides continues to rise following the disaster that struck Sumatra, Indonesia, at the end of November. The number of casualties from the Sumatra floods has increased by 31 in the last three days.

Based on data compiled by the National Disaster Management Agency or BNPB as of December 21 at 06:00, the death toll from the Sumatra disaster has reached 1,090.

The number of casualties from the Sumatra disaster is still potentially increasing. This is because the BNPB has recorded that 186 people are still missing. The BNPB also reported that more than 7,000 people have been injured.

The highest number of casualties is recorded in Aceh Province, with 472 people dead due to the floods and landslides that hit the northernmost region of the archipelago. Around 4,300 people in Aceh Province have also been injured due to the ecological disaster.

In North Sumatra Province, the BNPB recorded 370 fatalities, with 2,300 people injured. Meanwhile, in West Sumatra Province, the death toll stands at 248, with 382 others injured.

The BNPB also recorded 147,236 damaged houses due to the floods and landslides. Thousands of public facilities, including schools, bridges, health facilities, and places of worship scattered across the three provinces, have also been damaged after being hit by floods and landslides.

President Prabowo Subianto stated that the government will immediately build temporary and permanent housing for the victims affected by the Sumatra disaster. He claimed that the government has allocated a budget for the construction of these dwellings.

Furthermore, Prabowo plans to promptly establish a task force for the rehabilitation and reconstruction after the Sumatra disaster. He claimed that the disaster management situation is still under control. "We have deployed resources for the handling. These are three provinces out of a total of 38 provinces, so the situation is under control. I am constantly monitoring," he said.

Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya claimed that the central government has been handling the Sumatra disaster on a national scale since the first day of the disaster. Teddy explained that the government has deployed 50,000 personnel from the TNI (Indonesian National Armed Forces), Polri (Indonesian National Police), and Basarnas (National Search and Rescue Agency) to the disaster areas.

The central government, he said, has also allocated a budget to assist with the Sumatra disaster. "All of this will use central funds. It has been announced that 60 trillion Rupiah has been gradually disbursed," he said on Friday, December 19, 2025.

Teddy claimed that the budget has been allocated for the construction of temporary housing and the repair of public facilities. The budget has also been provided to regional leaders whose areas have been affected by the disaster.

In addition, Teddy claimed that the central government has sent more than 100 ships, planes, and helicopters to assist in disaster management. He stated that the government has also dispatched 1,000 pieces of heavy equipment to aid in the repair of Sumatra's disaster-affected infrastructure.
