TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and U.S. President Donald Trump had a phone conversation on Sunday in which they discussed efforts to secure a "fair and lasting end" to the war in Ukraine, according to London. This is amidst Washington-led Ukraine-Russia mediation.
As reported by CNA News, the phone call took place as the Trump administration was intensifying diplomatic efforts surrounding Ukraine. This followed a new round of talks involving Russian, Ukrainian, and European officials in Florida, led by the U.S.
These discussions have cautiously raised hopes of progress nearly four years after Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
According to a statement from Downing Street, Starmer briefed Trump on the work of the Willing States Coalition, a group of countries that have pledged support for Ukraine.
The coalition's role, Starmer said, is to help support future peace deals and ensure the end of ongoing hostilities.
As reported by Anadolu, the discussion followed Starmer's role last week as co-chair of a virtual meeting of the Coalition of the Willing, where participating countries agreed that the current moment is crucial for Ukraine, its people, and broader Euro-Atlantic security.
Situation in Gaza
The conversation underlined the coordination between London and Washington on Ukraine amidst renewed diplomatic engagement, as well as highlighting the breadth of issues on the transatlantic agenda, ranging from humanitarian issues in the Middle East to sensitive diplomatic appointments in Washington.
The statement noted that Starmer also provided updates on the appointment of the new UK Ambassador to the U.S., Christian Turner, and said that the appointment would deepen the relationship between the two countries.
The UK government appointed Turner on Thursday as the new UK ambassador to the U.S. He replaces Peter Mandelson, who was dismissed in September amidst controversy over his connection to the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
In addition to Ukraine and the ambassador, the two leaders also discussed the situation in Gaza. According to a statement from the UK government quoted by Anadolu, over 71,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli attacks since October 2023.
Although a ceasefire took effect on October 10, Israel continues to violate the agreement by failing to allow the agreed-upon number of medical aid trucks to enter Gaza. This deepens what health authorities describe as a critical and ongoing health emergency.
