TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Kylian Mbappe continued rewriting his World Cup history after scoring twice in France’s 3-0 victory over Sweden, adding more records to his growing list of achievements in the tournament.
The France captain’s brace at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on Tuesday helped Les Bleus advance while pushing Mbappé closer to some of the biggest World Cup scoring milestones.

1. Most World Cup Knockout-Stage Goals
Mbappé became the player with the most goals in World Cup knockout matches after scoring against Sweden.
His first goal in the 45th minute was his ninth knockout-stage goal, breaking the previous record shared by Brazilian greats Leonidas and Ronaldo, who each scored eight goals in World Cup knockout rounds.
The 27-year-old reached the milestone faster than many of football’s biggest names, strengthening his reputation as one of the most dangerous players in World Cup knockout history.
2. Closing in on Messi’s World Cup Record
Mbappé’s two goals against Sweden took his World Cup tally to 18 goals in 18 appearances.
The France forward is now only one goal behind Argentina legend Lionel Messi, who has scored 19 World Cup goals in 29 matches.
His scoring pace is among the most impressive in tournament history, with Mbappé reaching 18 goals in far fewer matches than Messi.
3. Six Goals in the 2026 World Cup
Mbappé’s brace also moved him to six goals in the 2026 World Cup, putting him level with Messi in the race for the Golden Boot.
The forward scored his first goal of the tournament in France’s group-stage campaign and has continued producing decisive moments in the knockout rounds.
World Cup Legacy Continues to Grow
Mbappé has already established himself as one of the most successful World Cup players of his generation.
He won the 2018 World Cup with France and scored a hat-trick in the 2022 final against Argentina, becoming only the second player after Geoff Hurst to score three goals in a World Cup final.
With France still chasing a third consecutive World Cup final appearance, Mbappé has more opportunities to add to his record-breaking campaign.
