Why Are Foldable Phones Still Struggling to Go Mainstream in 2026?

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Tech analysts predict that 2026 will not yet mark the breakthrough year for foldable smartphones, with traditional “candy bar” devices expected to remain the preferred choice for most users despite ongoing innovation in foldable technology.

Hardware Advances, Lingering Structural Concerns

From a technical standpoint, foldable phones have made notable progress. Citing Gizmochina on December 19, 2025, recent models are significantly slimmer, feature more durable hinges, and offer improved water resistance compared with the fragile first-generation devices.

However, these advancements have yet to address the core challenges of foldable design. Screen durability remains a major concern, particularly at the folding crease, making many consumers reluctant to switch from conventional smartphones.

Pricing is another significant barrier. With global costs for memory and electronic components continuing to rise, analysts do not expect foldable phone prices to drop substantially in 2026.

Repair expenses also remain high, as replacing a damaged foldable display can cost nearly as much as purchasing a new flagship smartphone.

Software Readiness and Market Outlook

On the software side, the ecosystem has struggled to keep pace with hardware development. While Google has introduced guidelines for large and foldable screens, user experience remains inconsistent due to varying screen ratios and form factors across manufacturers.

Some industry observers are looking to Apple to potentially reshape the market amid persistent rumors of a foldable iPhone. However, the US-based tech giant is known for its cautious approach and is unlikely to release a foldable device until the technology and supporting ecosystem are fully mature.

For now, analysts say consumers seeking durability, strong camera performance, and higher resale value continue to favor conventional smartphones. Foldable phones, they conclude, remain a premium niche product rather than an essential everyday device.
