TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - As transport disruptions related to the conflict in the Middle East shake global supply chains, fruit prices in Malaysia are expected to soar.
According to a recent report by the local media outlet Sin Chew Daily, cited Antara, shipping disruptions in the Middle East have prompted fruit farmers to purchase more expensive chemical fertilizers. The report quoted Koh Lai Ann, president of the Federation of Malaysian Fruit Growers Association.
"In just two weeks, the price of fertilizer raw materials has surged by 100 percent to 150 percent. If the conflict continues and suppliers are unable to deliver their goods, Malaysian fruit farmers could face a situation where they have the money but cannot buy fertilizer," said Koh.
He said that higher input costs are expected to impact production, which could lead to significant supply cuts and increased prices for consumers. Koh says the conflict could increase fruit prices in Malaysia by 20 percent or more.
He also said that fruits oriented toward export, such as durian and jackfruit, which depend on overseas sales, would face greater risks. This is because they would have to deal with soaring shipping and insurance costs, as well as fertilizer costs. He added that the Middle East is a production center and a major transit route for fertilizer raw materials.
The ongoing instability has disrupted shipping through the Suez Canal and the Red Sea. As a result, Koh said that some Malaysian fertilizer suppliers have been forced to halt new orders since mid-March.
