Halal Snack Polemic: Tests by MUI Contradict BPJPH, BPOM Findings on Pork Content

3 hours ago 2

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Chief Executive of the Indonesian Ulema Council's Assessment Institute for Foods, Drugs, and Cosmetics (LPPOM MUI), Muti Arintawati, has submitted the Halal Product Assurance Agency's (BPJPH) findings regarding seven halal-labeled snacks suspected of containing pork to the government. Muti stated that LPPOM's laboratory analysis found no traces of pork in these products.

"The government is responsible for the supervision. In this case, it's the responsibility of the Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) and BPJPH. So, from the LPH's (Halal Inspection Agency) perspective, we are handing it over to the government," Muti explained in Central Jakarta on Tuesday, May 6, 2025.

She clarified that LPPOM, in its capacity as an LPH, is responsible for conducting the testing process. Muti further stated that the laboratory results for nine products suspected of containing pork have been submitted to BPJPH. According to her, initial laboratory testing indicated that all nine products met halal standards.

"During the process, changes in the content were identified, and we have reported this to the government," she added.

Previously, on April 21, 2025, BPJPH and BPOM jointly announced the detection of pig DNA in nine marshmallow products. The Head of BPJPH, Ahmad Haikal Hasan, reported that sanctions, including the withdrawal of seven halal-labeled snack products from the market, had been implemented.

Regarding the remaining two products, which allegedly provided inaccurate data during product registration, BPOM has issued a formal warning. BPOM has also directed the respective businesses to immediately recall these products. These regulatory actions are based on Law No. 18 of 2012 concerning Food and Government Regulation No. 69 of 1999 concerning Food Labeling and Advertising.

The list of snacks that BPOM and BPJPH identified as containing pork is as follows:

1. Corniche Fluffy Jelly Marshmallow (Various Flavors: Lychee, Orange, Strawberry, Grape)

2. Corniche Apple Shaped Teddy Marshmallow (Apple Teddy Marshmallow)

3. ChompChomp Car Mallow (Car-Shaped Marshmallow)

4. ChompChomp Flower Mallow (Flower-Shaped Marshmallow)

5. ChompChomp Tube-Shaped Marshmallow (Mini Marshmallow)

6. Hakiki Gelatin (Food Additive for Gel Formation)
