TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Culture Fadli Zon said public interest in visiting museums and cultural heritage sites has skyrocketed by 400 percent in the past year thanks to various improvements, including the Museum Passport program.
He cited the growth in public visits to the Indonesian Heritage Museum in Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII) to illustrate his point. According to him, the museum attracted thousands of visitors after being revamped with more interactive experiences and various updates.
Prabowo, he said, has mandated museum improvements across the country to expand the role of museums into cultural and educational centers as well as drivers of the cultural economy.
Museums overseas have notably developed into destinations that generate income through supporting services, such as souvenir sales, restaurants, and coffee shops, according to Fadli.
A similar concept, he went on, has begun to be implemented in Indonesia, with the National Museum of Indonesia being used as a reference for museum development.
As part of the effort to drive public interest in museums, the Ministry of Culture has launched the Museum Passport program, which allows visitors to collect stamps and benefits from various museums in Indonesia.
"Gen Zs are incredibly interested, as it turns out. We only printed 5,000 copies and they sold out within a few days. Now we're printing another 8,000 Museum Passports," said Fadli, stating that there's a high demand for them.
Fadli shared hopes that the program would encourage more people, especially the younger generation, to visit museums in various regions and learn about Indonesian history and culture.
Fadli, however, remained mum on the economic revenues seen from the growth in museum visits, as the exact figure is still being calculated.
