TEMPO.CO, Jakarta OpenAI has announced that it will discontinue the Sora app, its generative artificial intelligence (AI) video creation service.

OpenAI did not reveal the details on why it will shut down the Sora app, released just last year, as reported by Variety on Tuesday, March 24 local time, as quoted from Antara.

“We’re saying goodbye to Sora. To everyone who created with Sora, shared it, and built community around it: thank you,” the statement read, as posted on the X social media platform.

We’ll share more soon, including timelines for the app and API and details on preserving your work,” it added.

OpenAI did not respond to requests for additional information.

This announcement comes just three months after Disney signed a groundbreaking deal with OpenAI.

Under the three-year licensing agreement, Sora will be able to generate user-prompted videos featuring over 200 characters with themes inspired by Disney, Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars.

Sora and ChatGPT Images will produce “fan-inspired” videos featuring Disney-licensed characters in early 2026, with Disney+ adding a curated selection of Sora-generated videos.

But Disney ultimately ended its partnership with OpenAI, which included plans to take a $1 billion stake in the AI company led by CEO Sam Altman.

Disney, through its representatives, said that it appreciated OpenAI for its decision to "exit the video generation business" and redirect its capabilities toward other priorities.

They also stated, “We appreciate the constructive collaboration between our teams and what we learned from it, and we will continue to engage with AI platforms to find new ways to meet fans where they are while responsibly embracing new technologies that respect IP and the rights of creators.”

OpenAI’s Sora caused quite a stir on several occasions, particularly in late September 2025.

At that time, the company promised AI-generated videos that looked incredibly realistic, raising concerns among Hollywood artists due to Sora 2’s opt-out model, which required IP owners to proactively flag their copyrighted works to be excluded from the system.

In November 2025, the Japanese content trade group CODA, whose members include the animation studio Studio Ghibli, issued a letter to OpenAI demanding that the AI company stop using their content to train Sora 2.

The company first introduced Sora in February 2024, and the Sora preview service at that time was introduced using a text-to-video model.

After the trial period ended, the company finally released the first version of Sora in December of that year.

Then, in September 2025, OpenAI released a standalone Sora application.

With the shutdown of the Sora application, ChatGPT will also no longer generate videos based on text prompts.
