TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - As many as 12,000 people were evacuated on Tuesday, July 7, as wildfires raging in the Pyrenees-Orientales department, southern France, continued to spread, according to BFMTV.
Local authorities told BFMTV that 12,000 residents had to be evacuated due to the spread of the fire in the commune of Trevillach, which required the deployment of around 800 firefighters.
The local prefect said the wildfire in the Pyrenees-Orientales remains uncontained, having burned around 4,900 hectares.
"We hope to contain the fire as quickly as possible, but I don't think we'll be able to do it today, given that the weather conditions are the same as yesterday," said Colonel Eric Belgioino, head of the Pyrenees-Orientales Fire and Rescue Service, as quoted from Antara, citing Anadolu.
The wildfire risk is currently at "very high" in three departments and "high" in 61 others. Meanwhile, an orange heat wave alert was in effect for 61 departments on Tuesday, with temperatures expected to range between 35 and 38 degrees Celsius.
In southwestern France, temperatures were expected to reach 41 degrees Celsius.
The French national meteorological agency stated that the heat wave is expected to continue through the end of this week.
“Nearly 14,500 hectares (about 35,800 acres) have already burned this season—almost three times more than at the same point last year,” Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu told the National Assembly on Monday.
