TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Tesla is still attempting to acquire the 'Robotaxi' trademark for its upcoming vehicle products that will provide next-generation ride-hailing or online taxi services.
Tesla's application has been rejected by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for being considered too generic, but a new application has been made and is currently under review by the office.
In addition, Tesla's application for the Cybercab trademark has been suspended because several other companies are also attempting to obtain the same 'Cyber' trademark. This includes a company that has filed numerous trademarks related to accessories for the former Cybertruck.
As reported by Tech Crunch, the USPTO issued what is known as a 'nonfinal office action' on the latest application for the 'Robotaxi' trademark on May 6, 2025. This means Tesla has three months to register a response or the USPTO will dismiss the application.
Tesla previously applied for the trademark in October 2024, coinciding with the introduction of the Cybercab, purpose-built electric vehicles projected to be used in future autonomous ride-hailing services.
Tesla also submitted two trademark applications for 'Robobus,' which are still under review by the USPTO.
Meanwhile, the rejected trademark application was resubmitted by Tesla to the USPTO examiner on April 14.
Based on the initial application documents, Tesla intends to use the term in reference to 'vehicles; autonomous electric vehicles; automobiles; and their structural parts.'
USPTO rejected the application not because it found a similar existing trademark, but because it deemed it 'entirely descriptive.'
USPTO stated that the term 'Robotaxi' is also used to describe similar goods and services by several other companies, making it a generic name.
Tesla will be allowed to submit evidence and arguments to support its application.
If done so, USPTO wants Tesla to provide specification sheets, instruction manuals, brochures, advertisements, and screenshots of the applicant's website related to the goods and/or services in the application.
In other words, Tesla needs to provide USPTO with specific plans for how and why it deserves the 'Robotaxi' trademark.
USPTO also wrote that Tesla must inform them if there are competitors using the terms Robo, Robot, or Robotic to advertise the same goods and/or services.
