The following is the list of the top 3 news on Tempo English today:
1. Why the Indonesian Rupiah Could Weaken to 20,000 per Dollar
Political Economy and Policy Studies (PEPS) has warned that Indonesia’s rupiah is increasingly vulnerable amid rising global geopolitical tensions, particularly the conflict in Iran.
Anthony Budiawan, Managing Director of PEPS, said the possibility of the rupiah weakening to around Rp20,000 per US dollar is no longer hypothetical but grounded in historical patterns.
“Indonesia has been lulled by the narrative that Indonesia's economy is strong, with large foreign exchange reserves exceeding US$150 billion,” Anthony said in a written statement on Monday, March 23, 2026.
2. Prabowo: Indonesia Safe, Public Should Evaluate Police Fairly
Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto stated that the security and social situation in the country is not as bad as many people imagine, even compared to conditions in several other countries. According to him, Indonesia remains relatively safe overall.
Prabowo expressed this during a roundtable discussion with journalists and experts at his private residence in Hambalang, Bogor, West Java, on Tuesday, March 17, 2026. The President mentioned that social issues and violence often occur in many countries, and are not unique phenomena only in Indonesia.
"This is a social problem everywhere, but our country is not doing that bad," Prabowo said as quoted from a video interview uploaded on Prabowo's YouTube account.
3. Fact Check: U.S. Soldiers Did Not Surrender in Fear of Iranian Retaliation
Several videos claiming that U.S. soldiers have surrendered out of fear of an Iranian attack have been circulating on Instagram [archive], Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, and X over the past week.
The posts depict three men in military uniforms in tears and hoping to be sent home immediately following Iran's retaliation. The narrative included in the clips claims that the U.S. military is terrified of Iranian missile attacks that it deems increasingly intense and out of control.
However, is it true that the circulating videos show U.S. soldiers stationed in the Middle East crying and asking to be sent home?
