TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Denpasar Region III Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BBMKG) revealed that cold air masses blowing in from Australia are driving down temperatures in Bali, making the island feel noticeably colder at night and in the early morning.
"The Australian continent is currently entering its winter season, bringing relatively high air pressure that pushes cold air masses toward Indonesia, passing directly through Bali and its surrounding areas," said BBMKG Region III forecaster Wayan Gita Giriharta in Denpasar on Saturday, as reported by Antara.
Winter in Australia typically spans from June through August.
This chilling phenomenon at night and in the morning usually coincides with the peak of Bali's dry season, which also runs through June, July, and August. This weather pattern, he added, is driven by the sun’s annual apparent motion and the activity of the Australian monsoon.
"During this period, the sun moves into the Northern Hemisphere, which creates a deficit of solar radiation for Indonesian regions located south of the equator, including Bali and its vicinity," he explained.
Beyond the influence of the Land of the Kangaroo, Bali's temperature shifts are also being amplified by relatively clear skies with minimal cloud cover.
He noted that these clear conditions allow the sun's accumulated daytime heat to escape directly back into the atmosphere, causing the air near the ground to cool down rapidly, particularly during the night and early morning hours.
Meanwhile, according to the BMKG Denpasar forecast, the minimum air temperature in Bali on May 30-31 will hover around an average of 20 degrees Celsius, with maximum temperatures hitting 32 degrees Celsius.
This temperature is one degree cooler than the forecast from the previous week on May 23-24, which recorded an average minimum of 21 degrees Celsius and a maximum ranging between 32 and 34 degrees Celsius.
Looking ahead, the lowest average air temperatures at Bali's popular highland tourist destinations are projected to dip to 19-30 degrees Celsius in Bedugul, Tabanan Regency, and Kintamani, Bangli Regency, on May 31, 2026.
