TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The WhatsApp group of members of Commission III of the House of Representatives (DPR) suddenly came alive on the afternoon of Wednesday, July 8, 2026. The legislators overseeing legal affairs exchanged messages as police searched several locations linked to former Deputy Attorney General for Special Crimes Febrie Adriansyah.
That day, police uncovered 74 kilograms of gold bars and Rp476 billion (around US$26.44 million) in cash in various currencies. Members of Commission III scrambled to learn more about the background of the investigation. “We were confused and surprised because the searches involved two institutions that are our partners,” Commission III Deputy Chair Rano Alfath told Tempo on Monday, July 13.
According to Rano, Commission III members had never been informed that the National Police were investigating Febrie. Believing the case remained shrouded in uncertainty, Rano contacted senior officials at the Attorney General’s Office (AGO) and National Police Criminal Investigation Department Deputy Chief Insp. Gen. Nunung Syaifuddin. But the National Awakening Party (PKB) politician said he received no clear explanation from Nunung. “We still didn’t have the full picture because the Deputy Chief of the Criminal Investigation Department said the case was still under investigation,” he said.
Although the allegations against Febrie were still unclear at the time, some Commission III members were already familiar with the track record of the former Jakarta High Prosecutor’s Office Chief in handling major cases. Several lawmakers said they had previously received complaints from businesspeople about how Febrie managed cases at the AGO.
