TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese have reaffirmed their shared commitment to the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, aligning with the principles of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
"The leaders underscore their ambition for a world without nuclear weapons and their commitment to strengthen the global non-proliferation regime," they declared in a joint statement, as released by the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Both Australia and Indonesia are founding members of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and remain steadfast supporters of its crucial role and mandate in upholding the NPT.
Prabowo and Albanese welcomed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Australian Safeguards and Non-Proliferation Office (ASNO) and the Indonesian Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency (BAPETEN) in a bid to foster a long-term partnership in nuclear security and protection, demonstrating their practical approach to non-proliferation.
This action serves as clear evidence of their joint dedication to taking practical steps toward preventing the spread of nuclear weapons.
Furthermore, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to the centrality of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in the Indo-Pacific region, agreeing to work towards maintaining peace, stability, and prosperity there.
They pledged continued cooperation in supporting the practical implementation of ASEAN's Indo-Pacific Outlook, a commitment highlighted by the upcoming ASEAN-Australia Special Summit in Melbourne in 2024, which will commemorate 50 years of their bilateral relations.
"The leaders welcome the Quad's support for ASEAN centrality, ASEAN's Indo-Pacific Outlook, and practical cooperation in the region," the joint statement added. The Quad is a security dialogue alliance comprising Australia, India, Japan, and the United States.
