TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Some 1,300 Israelis entered the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied East Jerusalem on Thursday morning to mark the Jewish holiday of Tisha B'Av, according to the Jerusalem Governorate.
As ANTARA reported, the authority said on social media that Israeli police increased the number of participants in each group entering the Al-Aqsa compound to around 150 people. The authority also said Israeli forces imposed strict restrictions at the entrances to Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Old City area of Jerusalem.
Israeli forces, according to the statement, were deployed in large numbers in the mosque's courtyard and prevented Palestinians from entering the compound to pray. Only a small number of Palestinians were able to reach the mosque for morning prayers before Israeli forces attacked several worshippers and other residents, the authority said.
Jerusalem authorities said Israeli visitors performed Talmudic rituals while at the Al-Aqsa compound. The ritual, according to the statement, includes wearing tefillin, prostrating fully in the eastern part of the complex, and chanting loudly.
The authority added that groups supporting the construction of a Jewish temple on the site had rallied to bring some 5,000 Israelis into the Al-Aqsa compound on the same day.
Al-Aqsa Mosque is the third holiest site for Muslims. Meanwhile, Jews call the area the Temple Mount and believe that this location was once the site of two Jewish temples in the past.
Israel has occupied East Jerusalem, including the Al-Aqsa Mosque area, since the Arab-Israeli War in 1967. Israel annexed all of Jerusalem in 1980, but this move was not recognized by the international community.
