Trump Targets Indian-Made iPhones with 25% Minimum Tariff

1 day ago 3

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - United States President Donald Trump has threatened to impose a 25 percent tariff on iPhones if Apple does not relocate its production to the U.S. Trump made the statement via a post on the social media platform Truth Social last Friday, May 23, 2025, local time.

"I have long ago informed Tim Cook of Apple that I expect their iPhone’s [sic] that will be sold in the United States of America will be manufactured and built in the United States, not India, or anyplace else," Trump wrote, as quoted from the report by Tech Crunch published on the same day.

"If that is not the case, a Tariff of at least 25% must be paid by Apple to the U.S. Thank you for your attention to this matter!" continued the statement.

The threat came just a few days after Foxconn, Apple's major manufacturing partner, announced a $1.5 billion investment to strengthen India's operational unit. Apple is known to be attempting to shift some of its hardware production to India amid the increasing trade tensions between the U.S. and China during Trump's presidency.

In an early May financial report, Apple's CEO, Tim Cook, mentioned that most iPhones sold in the U.S. would eventually come from India.

Trump also disapproved of Apple's move during last week's visit to the Middle East. Trump and Cook were reported to have met, although the meeting details were not disclosed.

Trump has recently criticized companies that try to avoid the negative impact of import tariffs imposed by the U.S. government. He told Walmart, one of the largest retail companies, to "Eat the tariffs." This means Walmart is asked to bear the additional costs of the tariffs without passing on price increases to consumers.
