6 days ago 19

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The nominations for the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards have been announced, highlighting a mix of returning favorites and breakout newcomers competing for television's highest honors. As reported by CNN, HBO Max medical drama The Pitt emerged as the most-nominated series, while Apple TV+ enjoyed one of its strongest Emmy showings with several new productions earning widespread recognition.

Here are seven key takeaways from this year's Emmy nominations.

1. The Pitt Leads All Shows With 25 Nominations

Medical drama The Pitt received 25 nominations, the highest total of any program this year. The HBO Max series dominated the drama categories, earning recognition for Outstanding Drama Series as well as multiple acting nominations, including Noah Wyle for Lead Actor and several supporting cast members.

Comedy series Hacks followed closely with 24 nominations, while Apple TV+'s supernatural comedy Widow's Bay secured 19.

2. Apple TV+ Enjoys a Breakout Year

Apple TV+ emerged as one of the biggest winners of the nomination announcement.

New series Pluribus, Margo's Got Money Troubles, and Widow's Bay all received major recognition across drama and comedy categories. Pluribus earned 18 nominations, while Widow's Bay landed 19, reflecting the streaming platform's growing presence at the Emmys.

3. British Stars Make a Strong Showing

One of the standout performers this year is Welsh actor Matthew Rhys, who became the only performer nominated for two lead acting awards—Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for Widow's Bay and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or TV Movie for The Beast In Me.

According to the BBC, British nominees also include Gary Oldman (Slow Horses), Rufus Sewell (The Diplomat), Riz Ahmed (Bait), and Carey Mulligan (Beef), highlighting another strong year for UK talent at the Emmys.

4. Major Hits Miss Out on Top Categories

Despite remaining popular with audiences, several high-profile shows failed to secure top-category nominations.

The final season of Stranger Things received seven nominations, but all were in technical categories, missing out on the Outstanding Drama Series race. Meanwhile, Euphoria was excluded from the drama series category, although Zendaya still earned a Lead Actress nomination and Colman Domingo was recognized for his guest performance.

CNN also noted that Canadian hockey drama Heated Rivalry was absent from the Emmy lineup because it was ineligible as an entirely Canadian production, although co-star Connor Storrie still earned a Guest Actor nomination for Saturday Night Live.

5. Comedy Categories Feature Several High-Profile Battles

The Outstanding Comedy Series race includes Abbott Elementary, The Bear, Hacks, Shrinking, Only Murders in the Building, Nobody Wants This, Margo's Got Money Troubles, and Widow's Bay.

One of the most anticipated contests is Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, where Lisa Kudrow (The Comeback) will face four-time Emmy winner Jean Smart (Hacks), alongside Quinta Brunson, Ayo Edebiri, and Elle Fanning.

Another surprise came in the Lead Actor category, where The Bear star Jeremy Allen White failed to receive a nomination despite winning the award in the previous two years.

6. Apple TV+, HBO Max and Netflix Dominate the Major Races

This year's nominations underline the growing dominance of streaming platforms.

HBO Max leads with heavily nominated titles including The Pitt, Hacks, and DTF St. Louis. Apple TV+ secured major nominations through Pluribus, Widow's Bay, Shrinking, Slow Horses, and Margo's Got Money Troubles. Netflix also maintained a strong presence with The Diplomat, Beef, The Beast In Me, and several limited-series contenders.

7. Winners Will Be Announced in September

The 78th Primetime Emmy Awards will be held in Los Angeles on Sept. 14. The ceremony will be hosted by Law & Order: Special Victims Unit star Mariska Hargitay and broadcast live on NBC while streaming on Peacock.

Among the marquee races, The Pitt, Hacks, Widow's Bay, Pluribus, and Beef are expected to be among the night's biggest contenders, while several acting categories feature highly competitive fields that include both Emmy veterans and first-time nominees.
