TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – France will activate its Extreme Heat ORSEC emergency plan for the first time on Friday, July 10, 2026, in areas placed under the highest weather alert level as a severe heatwave continues to grip much of Europe.
French government spokesperson Maud Bregeon said the measure aims to protect vulnerable populations from the effects of extreme temperatures.
"We will activate today, in all departments placed under red heat wave alert, the Extreme Heat ORSEC plan. (...) We will open cooling centers to shelter the most vulnerabl," Bregeon told TF1 television, as quoted by Anadolu.
The Extreme Heat ORSEC plan, introduced on July 2, serves as a nationwide emergency response mechanism that mobilizes state agencies during periods of extreme heat.
Under the plan, authorities will deploy additional resources and provide assistance to vulnerable residents, particularly elderly people, individuals living alone, and those at greater risk from prolonged exposure to high temperatures.
France's national weather agency, Meteo-France, said nine departments in the western part of the country would be placed under red heatwave alert from Friday afternoon, while another 72 departments remain under orange alert.
According to Meteo-France, the heatwave, which began on July 4, is expected to persist at least until Tuesday, July 14. Temperatures are forecast to rise again starting Sunday, July 12, raising concerns about further health and environmental impacts.
The prolonged spell of hot and dry weather has also fueled wildfires across the country. During the first week of July, about 9,921 hectares (24,515 acres) of land were burned—nearly three times the area affected during the same period last year.
The elevated wildfire risk has prompted authorities to cancel several Bastille Day fireworks displays, including events in the regions of Hérault and Vendée.
The latest measures come as several European countries continue to grapple with increasingly frequent and intense heatwaves, which scientists have linked to climate change.
