TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto received a visit from the former Prime Minister of Thailand from 2001 to 2006, Thaksin Shinawatra, on Wednesday night, July 8, 2026. The meeting took place at Prabowo's private residence on Kertanegara IV Street, Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta.
"After seeing off the departure of the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, at Yogyakarta International Airport, President Prabowo Subianto received a visit from the former Prime Minister of Thailand from 2001 to 2006, Thaksin Shinawatra, along with his family at the President's private residence in Kertanegara," said the Cabinet Secretary, Teddy Indra Wijaya, in a written statement.
Teddy stated that the meeting was also attended by Thaksin's daughter, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, who also previously served as the Prime Minister of Thailand from 2024 to 2025. According to Teddy, the gathering was a moment to strengthen the relationship between the two figures. The meeting between Prabowo and Thaksin was also said to be an effort to strengthen communication networks with world leaders and figures.
"The warm and friendly meeting was a moment to strengthen a long-standing friendship," said Teddy.
He added, "In a relaxing atmosphere, President and Thaksin also exchanged views on various global strategic developments as well as regional dynamics."
Teddy explained that apart from leading Thailand from 2001 to 2006, Thaksin Shinawatra is currently contributing to Indonesia as a member of the Danantara Advisory Board.
The Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs stated that Indonesia will continue to strengthen its relations with world figures as part of efforts to expand international cooperation. "Through meetings like this, Indonesia continues to strengthen friendship and communication networks with world leaders as part of efforts to expand cooperation and consolidate Indonesia's position amidst global dynamics," said Teddy.
