Prabowo Sends Ministers to Attend Pope Leo XIV's Inauguration

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto has dispatched Minister of Cooperatives Budi Arie Setiadi to represent Indonesia at the inauguration of Pope Leo XIV in Vatican City, Rome. The inauguration ceremony will take place at Saint Peter's Square on Sunday, May 18, 2025.

Budi Arie stated that he received a call from the Presidential Secretariat instructing him to depart for the Vatican early Saturday morning. "The plan is to arrive in Rome tomorrow morning at 7:00 local time," Budi Arie said in a written statement on Friday, May 16, 2025.

In addition to Budi Arie, Prabowo also sent Coordinating Minister for Community Empowerment, Abdul Muhaimin Iskandar (Cak Imin), and a representative or commissioner from state-owned insurance firm PT Asuransi Sosial Angkatan Bersenjata Republik Indonesia (Persero).

Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost was elected as the 267th Pope and the leader of the worldwide Catholic Church on Thursday, May 8, 2025, local time. After his election, he adopted the name Pope Leo XIV.

This process was followed by cardinals from various countries who had gathered in the Vatican to determine the new leader of the Catholic Church.

The 2025 Conclave was attended by 133 out of 135 eligible cardinals. After four rounds of voting over two days, on May 8 at 18:07 local time, white smoke billowed from the Sistine Chapel chimney, signaling the election of the new Pope and concluding the sede vacante period.
