TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto urged the people of Indonesia to learn from India. He praised India's democratic climate.
Prabowo expressed this in his speech before the Indian diaspora at the Indian Community Reception event, which was also attended by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Tuesday, July 7, 2026. He stated that despite having a population of billions, India is able to maintain its government stability.
The Head of State stated that learning from India's experience is essential for Indonesia as a country with significant diversity. "The important thing is that the Indonesian people must learn from India's experience," said Prabowo.
The former Defense Minister during President Joko Widodo's era argued that India's success in achieving peaceful government transitions over the years is an achievement that Indonesia can learn from.
"We see India, a country with a population of 1.4 billion people, many diverse ethnic groups like ours, and many different regional languages. But they have managed many years of peaceful government transitions in many states. And within the Indian Union itself, this is an extraordinary achievement," he remarked.
He added, "And Indonesia, I myself am learning and following India's extraordinary achievements."
At the same event, Prabowo also emphasized that democracy is the best system.
"Democracy is not an easy system; it is sometimes very chaotic. But I think we agree that it is the best system for justice, for hope, for inclusivity," said Prabowo.
The Chair of the Gerindra Party admitted that in practice, democracy has various risks. He claimed that there are always challenges, pitfalls, and parties trying to hijack the democratic process for certain interests.
Therefore, Prabowo called on all elements of the nation to maintain trust in democracy. According to him, this is to ensure that the democratic process follows the correct principles.
"We must not give up. We must continue to believe in democracy and make efforts to uphold it," he said.
